The Determined Fraudster
On May 6th, 2024, a Texas woman appeared at a dealership with her sights set on a $99,620 Cadillac Escalade. She came prepared with seemingly legitimate documents—a Texas driver’s license and active insurance cards—and even secured an approved captive car loan.
However, when the dealership used Gather for identity and insurance verification, the truth came to light: both the license and insurance card were counterfeit. When the dealership confronted the woman, she abandoned the deal.
Undeterred, the same woman attempted the same scam at a different dealership on May 8th, this time targeting a $94,100 BMW M4. Once again, she presented fake documents with different identifying information and secured another loan approval. But Gather's technology once more detected the fraud. Gather collaborated closely with dealership management, which led to police involvement.
In a well-coordinated sting operation, the woman was apprehended when she attempted to take delivery of the BMW. A subsequent investigation revealed her involvement in a larger fraud ring. Notably, other dealerships in the area, lacking Gather's protection, had fallen victim to similar schemes.
This story, also featured in Automotive News, underscores the sophistication of modern fraudsters in creating fake driver’s licenses and insurance cards that can bypass traditional verification processes. Gather, however, uses a combination of biometric data and other proprietary inputs to more accurately verify identity and fraud risk. It’s all part of our larger insurance verification and transfer solution. This unique approach has proven its ability to stop fraud in its tracks, protecting dealerships from significant losses, all while relieving them from the burdens of insurance administration.
